And she's off!
And she's off!

I'm late starting my seeds this year as I was away for the later part of January and the beginning of February. After catching up on jet lag (I'm convinced this gets worse as we age!) and with the house renovations well underway, sowing seeds this year has been rather delayed.

I'm usually in the greenhouse come February, planting far too many seeds and chancing some early sowings. This year however, I am playing catch up. This last weekend gave way to me updating my seed library spreadsheet and adjusting my planting numbers with the youngest daughter having left for university last September.

It was then time to do my favorite new year task and get some seeds ordered. I have been growing fruit and veg on an allotment since 2014 so i usually have a mix of tried and tested seed varieties along with a few new ones to keep things interesting. More recently, I have also been trying to add some flowers to the vegetable garden to bring some colour and attract local wildlife. While I am quite confident with my fruit and veggies now, I really cannot say the same about flowers!! Last year was a bit hit and miss with the hits resulting in stunning dahlias, gladioli, pelegoniums from bulb/seed. If you happened to walk by the garden last year, there were many more flowers in the garden but these were purchased as plants from Grow Limited (a wonderful local charity that offers horticultural training opportunities to adults with learning disabilities) so I can't take any credit for them!

So, back to today...

Today was operation get some seeds sown down at the indoor allotment (greenhouse). Here is the list of seeds sown today:

Aubergine: Black Beauty

Celeriac: Mars

Celery: F1 Victoria

Coriander: Cruiser

Courgette: Striato di Napoli

Fennel: Mammoth

Lettuce: Mixed concoction of varieties!

Melon: F1 Emir

Parsley: Giant Italian

Squash: Uchiki Kuri, Butterscotch

Sweetcorn: F1 Swift

Sweet Pepper: California Wonder

Tomatoes: Honeycomb, F1 Crimson Crush, Super Marmande.

So that's it, I have made a start at least! This year I am going to try to direct sow a lot more to cut down on congestion in the indoor allotment. This year I will be adding spinach and peas to my usual radish outdoor sowings.

Are you trying any new varieties of fruit or veg this year?

Until next time!

Kelly x
